Accessibility
This site is built to be usable by everyone
Including on an old phone, on a slow connection, with a screen reader, or with one hand.
Our standard
We build to WCAG 2.2 Level AA. That is the current international standard for web accessibility.
What that means here
- Big text. Body text starts at 18 pixels and scales up on larger screens. You can zoom to 200% without anything breaking.
- Big tap targets. Every button and link is at least 48 by 48 pixels — twice the minimum — because we assume cracked screens and cold hands.
- High contrast. Dark text on a light background throughout. No grey text on grey.
- Keyboard first. Everything works without a mouse, with a visible focus outline you cannot miss, and a skip link to jump past the menu.
- Help in the same place on every page. The phone number sits in the same spot on every single page, and on mobile it is never hidden inside a menu.
- Motion you can turn off. If your device is set to reduce motion, all animation stops. Nothing on this site flashes or auto-plays.
- Real HTML. Headings are in order, images have descriptions, form labels are permanent and never disappear into the box.
- Plain language. Client-facing pages are written at roughly a sixth grade reading level, in short paragraphs.
- Light pages. The site is built to load fast on an older Android phone over a weak signal, because that is how many of the people we serve reach us.
Where we are not there yet
Our Spanish pages cover the essentials but not the whole site. The intake form is English-only for now — call us and we will fill it out with you in Spanish.
Found a problem?
Tell us and we will fix it. Call (202) 491-3155 or email support@getato.org. If a page on this site is stopping you from getting help, call us and we will do it with you over the phone instead. That option is always open.
